NIOA is proud to partner with the Department of Defence with the placement of undergraduate interns in a work experience environment.
NIOA is a 100% Australian Owned company and one of the largest supplier of weapons and munitions systems to law enforcement and military markets. We have an unrivalled skill base and as a trusted Defence Prime, the placement of ADF interns in real world defence industry is mutually beneficial.

NIOA is impressed with the high quality of Defence cadets joining us and we would like to introduce you to a couple of young men who are getting some hands-on experience at NIOA.

Nathan Widdup
PLTOFF Nathan Widdup is currently in his fourth-year studying mechanical engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Once he graduates, he will commence work as an Armament Engineer in the Royal Australian Airforce.

James Kuang
PLTOFF James Kuang is currently a fourth-year student studying a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering at UNSW Canberra. As an Air Force engineer, James will need to actively and effectively engage with Defence Industries.

While studying, both Nathan and James are undertaking 6 weeks of work experience at NIOA where they are working in support of several current weapon and munitions projects. Mark Osborn, NIOA’s Ammunition Technical Manager said there are many reasons why we accept work experience students at NIOA.

These include:

  • Feedback to other interns on how Defence Industry works and providing them with the knowledge they need to liaise with our industry in the future.
  • Providing interns an insight into the multiple facets of a commercial organisation from supply, engineering, maintenance and testing.
  • Learning about military issues and structure through discussions with interns.

By partnering with NIOA, interns also gather an understanding of how engineering is undertaken in industry as opposed to Defence. They gain understanding on how Defence policy and decisions influence industry on a daily basis and it provides knowledge to assist their decision making process when they have future dealings with industry.

We look forward to partnering with the Department of Defence for future engineering internships.
